1935 - "POSTES IRANIENNES" overprint

Persian Empire was founded in 539 B.C. by Cyrus the Great in a district known since the antiquities as Pers or Pars. Cyrus the Great was the first ruler in the history who decreed in 559 B.C. that all men are created equal and are free to worship any God they wish to worship and abolished slavery in all the lands of his Empire. His Proclamation of Human Rights Inscribed on a clay cylinder in cuneiform was discovered in 1879 and now is kept in The British Museum, London. Since he issued his declaration in 559 B.C. and proclaimed that everyone is born free and no slave to any other, from that time the Persian Empire was called Iran-Shahr or the Country of Freemen. Ir and Ar are two terms taken from Avesta the book of Zoroaster, meaning Noble or Free, and since Cyrus the Great was not a Conqueror but a Liberator, therefore the inhabitants of his Empire were named Ir-an or Ary-an and his Empire was named Iran-Shahr (The Country of Free). However the foreign people not familiar with the history were yet calling Iran by the name "Persia" and its people "Persians". In December 1934, the government of Iran through an official announcement informed all the foreign  legations in Tehran that:

"... the name Iran more suitably describes the present empire than the word Persia, which was derived from the old province of Pers, from which the country developed."

To comply with the position of the Iranian government regarding the name of the country, the existing stock of postage stamps were overprinted in French "Postes Iraniennes" and "Iran" and as of January 1st 1935 the term "Persanes" and "Perse" was replaced by "Iraniennes" and "Iran".
